오늘의 묵상
십자가 처형은 매우 끔찍하고 참으로 비인간적이며 비도덕적인 것으로 간주되었기에, 그리스 문화권에서는 "십자가에 못박다"(crucify)라는 단어가 정중한 대화의 소재조차 될 수 없었습니다. 십자가 처형은 정권을 위협하는 사회의 인간쓰레기 취급을 받는 이들을 위해 예비된 것이었습니다. 예수님께서는 그런 끔찍한 죽음을 견디셨습니다. 하지만 하나님을 모욕하려고 의도했던 사탄의 이 계획을, 예수님께서는 사탄과 그의 악한 천사들의 모욕으로 바꾸어 버리셨습니다. 예수님께서는 공개적인 개선행진에 그들을 내세우셨습니다. 고문하는 채찍의 수치를 영광의 제단으로 변화시키셨습니다. 유혈이 낭자한 지옥의 분노를 용서의 희생제사로 변화시키셨습니다. 살인을 위한 악한 권세를 치유의 장소로 바꾸셨습니다. 예수님께서 십자가를 지심으로 당하신 말할 수 없는 희생과 수치를 애도한다면, 동시에 악한 자와 그의 엄청난 미움도 산산조각 나버렸음을 기뻐해야 합니다. 그들의 분명해 보였던 승리가 그들의 패배가 되어버렸습니다. 하나님의 가장 지독한 수치가 그의 가장 위대한 은혜가 되었으며, 이 은혜로 사탄의 손아귀에서 우리를 되찾으셨습니다.
Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Crucifixion was so hideous, so inhumane, and vile that the words "crucify" (σταυρόω) and "cross" (σταυρός) were not considered appropriate in polite speech in Greek and Roman culture. Crucifixion was reserved for the scum of society who were considered a threat to the government. Jesus endured this hideous death. But what Satan had intended for the humiliation of God, Jesus turned into the humiliation of Satan and his demonic allies. He made a public spectacle of them. He turned their torture stick of shame into an altar of grace and glory. He transformed the gory fury of hell into a sacrifice of forgiveness for us. He redirected evil's power to kill and made it God's place to heal. While we deplore the unspeakable sacrifice and shame that Jesus bore on the cross for us, we also rejoice that the evil one and his hoards of hate were broken. Their apparent victory is turned into their defeat. What was supposed to be God's greatest shame becomes his most lavish demonstration of grace, which ransoms us from Satan's grasp.

거룩하시고 의로우신 아버지 하나님, 아버지의 계획과 희생과 구원에 대한 제 감사의 표현은 말로 다 할 수가 없습니다. 사랑하는 예수님, 예수님의 사랑과 능력의 희생제사에 대해 그 어떤 찬송이나 가슴이 저며오는 시나 사랑의 편지들도 제 감사를 다 표현할 수가 없습니다. 죄와 사망과 의미없는 삶에서 저를 구원하셨으니 감사를 드립니다. 사랑하는 아버지와 주 예수님께, 제 삶을 감사와 찬송의 선물로 올려드립니다. 아멘.

No words, holy and righteous Father, can adequately express my appreciation for your plan, sacrifice, and salvation. No song of praise, heartfelt poem, or letter of love can ever express my thanks, dear Jesus, for your loving and powerful sacrifice. Thank you for saving me from sin, death, and a life without enduring meaning. To you, dear Father, and you, Lord Jesus, I offer my life as my gift of thanks and praise. Amen.
